Are PGS, HDMV PGS, and SUP the same thing?
Yes, they all refer to the exact same subtitle format. They are just different names used depending on how the format is being stored or discussed:
- PGS (Presentation Graphics Stream): The official name of the image-based subtitle format designed for Blu-ray discs.
- HDMV PGS: The technical name for these subtitles when they are multiplexed into a Blu-ray's video stream (High Definition Movie mode).
- .sup: The file extension used when a PGS subtitle track is extracted from a disc and saved as a standalone file on your computer.
Why is OCR necessary for SUP to SRT?
A SUP file contains pictures of subtitle text, not text that can simply be renamed. OCR recognizes the pictures and creates text; results depend on the selected language and image quality, so review the output.
Can I convert SUP to ASS?
Yes. Add the SUP files, choose ASS in the output format selector, then convert and review the recognized text. OCR does not recover the original editable styles, fonts, positioning, or effects from subtitle images. Open the subtitle converter. What if OCR is slow or inaccurate?
Confirm the subtitle language and review names, punctuation, and other uncertain text. Standard OCR is used by default. The optional two-step OCR uses a deep-learning model to detect text regions and then recognize them; it is slower, available only for supported languages, and can improve recognition particularly for Chinese and Japanese. See two-step OCR language support.Do my subtitle files leave my device?
No. Subtitle processing happens in your browser. OCR models may be downloaded, but your subtitle files are not sent to our server. Keep the tab open while converting.
